BRIDGET JONES, a runaway best seller when it was first released in Britain, is a novel in diary form about a 30-something young woman and her romantic adventures. The plot, which has some intriguing connections to Jane Austen's PRIDE AND PREJUDICE that probably have Austen spinning in her grave, also involves Bridget's tendency to binge on chocolate, the disastrous publishing parties she goes to, her attempts to quit smoking, and the exploits of her daffy mother.
